Today we are going to learn how to say “what are you doing in Spanish”.
The most common translation is:
- What are you doing – Que estas haciendo? – Que estas haciendo ahora?
- What are you doing in an informal way – Que haces?
- What are you doing in a formal way – Que esta haciendo?
Getting Spanishy with it
Despite the fact that in Spanish the meaning of the phrase is the same, we are more straightforward, especially in Argentina. We have three different ways to say the same thing. One is “¿Qué estás haciendo?” (it literally means “What are you doing?” in Spanish).
The other one is “¿Qué hacés?”. It could translate as “What do you do?” in English, but it does not have the same meaning, pay attention here. When we ask “¿Qué hacés?” in Spanish, the answer is the same as we explained before. It is related to feelings or activities. Usually, when in English we ask “What do you do?”, it could be work oriented, or we could answer with this song.
The last way, or the last I can think of, is “¿Qué andás haciendo?”. This one is very informal, and in English it could be translated as “What do you have going?” o “What is going on?” (hey, not as drama queen as this song!). The verb “andar” in Spanish means “to go to someplace”, or is even a synonym to the verb “to go”. So when someone asks you in Spanish: “¿Qué andás haciendo?” they are wondering not just about what you are doing in that precise instant, but also, what is going with your life. How are you feeling? How are you coping with certain situations?
