In Spanish we say “Feliz Cumpleaños”. “Feliz” means “Happy” and “Cumpleaños” means “Birthday”. That’s easy, right? But, what else besides “Feliz cumpleaños” can we say? Let’s discover it in this post!

Useful Phrases to wish a Happy Birthday in Spanish

Contents

So, here we have some phrases you can use to wish a Happy Birthday in Spanish (besides the classic “Feliz Cumpleaños”):

  • ¡Que tengas un muy Feliz Cumpleaños! (Translation: Have a very Happy Birthday!)
  • ¡Feliz cumple! (Translation: It’s just the short way to say “Feliz Cumpleaños”)
  • ¡Que pases un muy feliz día! (Translation: Have a very happy day!)
  • ¡Felicidades! (Translation: Congratulations!)

Songs to sing that day

Now we will see how to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish! The classical song is just called “Feliz Cumpleaños“, and these are the lyrics:

¡Que los cumplas feliz, que los cumplas feliz, que los cumplas “NAME OF THE PERSON”, que los cumplas feliz!

For example: ¡Que los cumplas feliz, que los cumplas feliz, que los cumplas Danilo, que los cumplas feliz!

This is a variation of Feliz Cumpleaños, it changes depending on the country you are in: ¡Cumpleaños feliz, cumpleaños feliz, te deseamos todos, cumpleaños feliz!

Fun fact: We actually have like the second part of “Feliz Cumpleaños”. It has some religious content because it names God (Dios). And it says: ¡Feliz, feliz en tu día! ¡Amiguito que Dios te bendiga! ¡Que reine la paz en tu día! ¡Y que cumplas muchos más!” (Translation be something like Happy, happy on your day! Little friend, God bless you! May peace reign in your day! And have more years!)

And what about the word we use to say Happy Birthday? Feliz Cumpleaños don’t literally mean Happy Birthday. “Cumplir” can be translated as “Turn” (an age), and años it means, of course, “years old”. So, “cumplir años” , as a verb, means “to turn your age” (on your birthday, of course!).

And the conjugation in Present Tense is this:

Yo cumplo años en enero

Tú cumples años en febrero

Él o Ella cumple años esta semana

Nosotros cumplimos años el mismo mes

Ellos, Ellas o Ustedes cumplen años en agosto

Please note that all the wishes are written in Subjunctive. That’s because in Spanish you need to write wishes like this. The “Que” on the expression “Que los cumplas feliz” means “Yo deseo (I wish) que los cumplas feliz”.

“Un cumpleaños” it’s the name of the event. So, you can say perfectly “Hoy tengo un cumpleaños” and this can be translated as “Today I’m going to a Birthday Party”.
