Firstly, prepositions are used to indicate a relationship between two words or phrases, linking them together. They are often used to indicate relationships of location, direction, or time. However, prepositions often can’t be translated literally. So, the best solution is to check a dictionary, read a lot of Spanish, and learn prepositional phrases by heart.

Tricky prepositions with verbs:

As we said before, translate the preposition is not always the best option to say the correct word in Spanish. However, if you can study the list of verbs that works with prepositions, you’ll be able to speak correctly this beautiful language. So, here you have a few examples. But, be careful, this list is just a sample.

The verb “PENSAR”

Even though in English, we say that we are “thinking about” or “thinking of” someone, in Spanish, “Pensar sobre” and “Pensar de” are both incorrect. So, in Spanish we use the verb “pensar” with the preposition EN:

  • Pensar en ti
  • (Think of you)
  • Pensar en mi vida
  • (Think about my life)
  • Pensar en viajar
  • (Think about traveling)

The verb “SOÑAR”

Although we say “dreaming about” and “dreaming of”, you cannot say “Soñar sobre” or “Soñar de”. So, when we talk about “dreaming about” in Spanish, we have to use “soñar con”.

  • Soñar con mi mamá
  • (Dream about my mom)
  • Soñar con viajar
  • (Dream about traveling)
  • Soñar con aprender español
  • (Dream of learning Spanish)

The verb “ENAMORARSE”

Although we fall in love with someone in English, in Spanish “estar enamorado con” is incorrect. So, the correct answer in Spanish would be: “estar enamorado/a de”:

  • Estoy enamorada de ti
  • (I’m in love with you)
  • Estoy enamorado de mi país
  • (I’m in love with my country)
  • Estoy enamorade del Amor (Psst! If you want to know about gender-neutral in Spanish, read this post)
  • (I’m in love with love)
